István Kónya

István Kónya (* 1962 in Nagykanizsa ) is a Hungarian lutenist .

Kónya obtained a teaching degree in music and history in 1985. He then studied classical guitar with Zoltán Tokos at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Debrecen. From 1989 to 1994 he studied lute with Toyohiko Satoh at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague . After graduating in lute, he also obtained a diploma in chamber music in 1996. He attended master classes with Nigel North and Steven Stubbs .

Since 1993 he has been giving master classes for early music in Hungary, and from 1996 to 1998 he was artistic director of the Summer Academy for Early Music in Szombathely. Since 2006 he has directed the International Lute and Guitar Festival in Győr. He performed at festivals for early music in Hungary and worked a. a. with the Budapest Chamber Opera, the Hungarian Radio Orchestra and the Concerto Armanico . He also took part in festivals in Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Italy and Croatia.

Since 2000 he has been giving series of solo concerts in Budapest on a regular basis. a. the singers Timothy Bentch , Mária Zádori , Ildikó Hajnal , Bernard Loonen and Ludy Vrijdag , the baroque violinist László Paulik , the gambist Lúcia Krommer and the organist and harpsichordist Miklós Spányi . In 2003 he went on a concert tour through the USA with singer Timothy Bentch. In 2004 he had solo appearances at the Tallinn Early Music Festival.

Kónya has made numerous radio and television recordings, has worked on several CDs and has so far released two solo albums: Lute Music from Three Centuries and SLWeiss : Lute Suites .
