István Mészáros (philosopher)

István Mészáros (born December 19, 1930 in Hungary ; † October 1, 2017 ) was a political philosopher .

Life

István Mészáros studied philosophy with Georg Lukács . In 1949 he was threatened with de-registration after he had publicly defended Lukacs against attacks from the Hungarian Communist Party. After the fall of the Hungarian government by the USSR in 1956, Mészáros had to leave Hungary. Mészáros had always campaigned for a socialist transformation of society, but against a Soviet bureaucratic dictatorship.

At first he taught at the University of Turin . In 1959 he moved to England, where he held positions at Bedford College, University of London, the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, and finally at the University of Sussex . From 1972 to 1977 he was Professor of Philosophy at York University in Canada, and then returned to Sussex. There he held the chair of philosophy for 15 years.
