István Tarlós (2014)

István Tarlós (born May 26, 1948 in Budapest ) is a Hungarian politician and was Lord Mayor of Budapest from 2010 to 2019. Before that he was mayor of the Third District of Budapest from 1990 to 2006 . In the mayoral election on October 13, 2019, he was defeated by opposition candidate Gergely Karácsony .

Life

Tarlós studied from 1968 to 1971 at the Technical University of Budapest and completed his studies in civil engineering two years later in Győr with a diploma. Tarlós worked in the construction industry for more than 15 years and in the late 1980s also ran an architecture office with his wife Cecília Nagy.

After the political change in Hungary, he became a member of the liberal association of Free Democrats in 1989 and, with the support of Fidesz, was elected Mayor of the Third District of Budapest in 1990. In 1994 he left his party after it had formed a coalition with the Hungarian Socialist Party at the national level . From then on he ran as a non-party candidate and was re-elected three times as district mayor with the support of Fidesz and the Christian Democratic People's Party (KDNP).

In the mayoral election on October 1, 2006, István Tarlós ran as a joint Fidesz and KDNP candidate for the mayor's office of Budapest. He received 45.20% of the vote; Incumbent Gábor Demszky received 46.86%. From 2006 to 2010 he was chairman of the Fidesz group in the capital's municipal council. In the Mayor election on October 3, 2010, he received 53.37% of the vote, Csaba Horváth (MSZP) received 29.47% of the vote.

During Tarlós' tenure, the fourth line of the Metró Budapest was put into operation. He came under fire for the controversial appointment of György Dörner as artistic director of the Budapest New Theater and the plan to name a Budapest street in 2013 after the anti-Semitic writer Cécile Tormay (for whom a bust was also erected in 2012 ). In the local elections on October 12, 2014, Tarlós was confirmed in office with 49.06%, with the following electoral term being extended to five years.

István Tarlós has three adult children and six grandchildren.
