Itamar (biblical person)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Itamar is mentioned in Ex 6,23  EU as the fourth and youngest son of Aaron from the tribe of Levi and Elisheba , which came from the family of Judah .

Ex 28  EU describes the ordination of Aaron and his four sons Nadab , Abihu , Eleazar and Itamar as priests. Since Aaron's two eldest sons perish as a result of a misconduct in worship ( Lev 10.1  EU ) without leaving any sons, the office of high priest passes to the eldest surviving son, Eleazar, after Aaron's death. Itamar becomes the head of a group of priests outside the high priestly line (cf. Ezra 8.2  EU ) and, according to Ex 38.21  EU , Num 4.28  EU , Num 4.33  EU and Num 7.8  EU, has a leadership role vis-à-vis the Levites, the are entrusted with the construction and transport of the sanctuary.

The high priest Eli , who brought up the prophet Samuel , can be seen as a descendant from a comparison of 1 Kings 2.27  EU with 1 Chr 24.3.6  EU .

Today's Israeli settlement of Itamar is named after him.
