Julia Motoc

Iulia Antoanella Motoc (born August 20, 1967 in Timișoara , Romania ) is a Romanian legal scholar , professor at the University of Bucharest and since 2013 a judge at the European Court of Human Rights .

Life

After finishing school, Motoc studied law at the University of Bucharest . After a master’s degree in law from the University of Paul Cézanne Aix-Marseille III , where he did his doctorate on a topic of international law. At the Jean Monnet Institute of the University of Paris-South she completed her habilitation, and she also earned the title of Doctor of Philosophy at the Institute of Philosophy at the University of Bucharest. Motoc was a member and president of the UN sub-commission for the promotion and protection of human rights. She was the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the United Nations Special Rapporteur on recent human rights violations. In this role, she paid special attention to violence against women and children. She also continues to act as an arbitrator and mediator at the International Center for the Settlement of Investment Disputes .

She is a member of the United Nations Human Rights Committee . She is also a professor at the University of Bucharest , where she teaches courses on international law, human rights and European law. She teaches as a visiting professor at various universities, including NYU, Yale University, European University Institute, Florence and the UN University in Tokyo.

In 2010 she was appointed judge at the Constitutional Court of Romania . On December 18, 2013, she was appointed judge at the European Court of Human Rights .

Motoc is married to the former Romanian ambassador to the EU, Mihnea Motoc . The couple have one son.
