Ivan Bystřina

Ivan Dostál-Bystřina (born October 8, 1924 in Nový Jičín , Czechoslovakia, † March 18, 2004 in Berlin ) was a Czech communications scientist and professor at the Free University of Berlin .


After attending the secondary school in Nový Jičín (Abitur 1943), Bystřina studied law at the Charles University in Prague (doctorate in law in 1949). Study visits to Moscow, Turin and Brussels followed. From 1955 to 1969 Bystřina worked at the Institute for State and Law of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences , most recently as its director. During the Prague Spring , Bystřina was also a member of the editorial team of the literary magazine Literarni Listy , which played a key role in preparing the reform process in Czechoslovakia. After the crackdown on the Prague Spring, Bystřina left Czechoslovakia and came to Germany, where he initially held visiting professorships in Mannheim, Heidelberg and Bochum. In 1970, Bystřina received a professorship for communication science at the Free University of Berlin .


Ivan Bystřina was born as "Ivan Dostál", his grandfather, Ferdinand Dostál (1861–1931), was known as a Czech writer under the pseudonym " Otakar Bystřina ".
