Ivan F. Simpson

Ivan Freebody Simpson (born February 4, 1875 in Glasgow , Scotland , † October 12, 1951 in New York City , United States ) was a British actor.

life and career

The native Scot immigrated to the United States at a young age. In 1905 Simpson made his Broadway debut in New York in Lucky Darham . By 1950 he played on Broadway in over 30 plays, mostly in supporting roles. He made his film debut at the age of 40 in 1915, and by 1948 he was to take part in over 100 other films. He was a valued friend and colleague of the famous character actor George Arliss , together they appeared in seven films. Simpson played alongside Arliss in the biography Disraeli and in two film adaptations of the play The Green Goddess , each in the role of the sleazy Mr. Watkins.

During the 1930s Simpson was a busy supporting actor in Hollywood, often impersonating figures such as butlers, priests, judges or doctors. He played minor roles alongside Errol Flynn in the adventure films Unter Piratenflagge , The Prince and the Beggar Boy and Robin Hood, King of the Vagabonds . In addition, he was mainly involved in literary adaptations , for example in David Copperfield as Servant Littimer, in The Little Lord as Reverend Mordaunt and in Found Years as the Vicar. As the 1940s progressed, Simpson's roles became increasingly smaller. He retired from the film business in 1948.

Ivan F. Simpson worked as an actor until his death and had a number of guest roles in the fledgling television in the early 1950s. He died in 1951 at the age of 76 and was buried in New York's Kensico Cemetery. His daughter was the actress and producer Pamela Simpson (1905-2002).
