Ivan Garofalo

Ivan Garofalo (born June 12, 1948 in Catania ) is an Italian Graecist and medical historian .

Garofalo completed his academic career at the University of Siena . From 1975 to 1984 he was assistant for Greek literature, from 1984 associate professor for the history of medicine, from 1992 associate professor for the history of the Greek language, from February 2000 associate professor for the history of classical languages. He has been a full professor there since 2003.

Garofalo's main field of work is the edition, commentary and translation of ancient Greek, Byzantine and Arabic texts on ancient medicine and biology .

He is a member of the Unité de recherches Médecine antique of the French CNRS in Paris, has published numerous conference papers on Hippocrates , Galen , Latin medicine and the edition of ancient medical texts and is on the scientific advisory boards of the journals Medicina nei Secoli , Medicina e storia and Fontes been appointed.

Together with Daniela Manetti, Garofalo worked on the Greek-Italian dictionary, which was edited by Franco Montanari in 1995 and has since been considered a standard work.

Garofalo is also the founder and editor of the Galenos magazine, which has been published since 2007 . Rivista di filologia dei testi medici antichi , a periodical specially dedicated to the edition, translation, commentary and all other philological aspects of ancient medical texts. Alessandro Lami (1949–2015) was one of his close collaborators in this context and in other respects .
