Franco Montanari

Franco Montanari (born May 24, 1950 in Sannazzaro de 'Burgondi , Lombardy ) is an Italian classical philologist .

Life

After attending the Liceo in Pavia , Montanari studied at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa until 1973 . From 1977 to 1983 he taught as professore incaricato (university lecturer) for Byzantine philology , from 1983 to 1986 as associate professor of Greek grammar. In 1986 he moved to the University of Genoa as a full professor of Greek language and literature , where he has been active in teaching and research ever since.

Montanari's research focuses on the ancient Homer philology and the reception of the Homeric epics. With the collaboration of Ivan Garofalo and Daniela Manetti, he published a Greek-Italian dictionary in 1995, which has since been considered a standard work and has been translated into English. As an organizer of classical studies, he is active on an international level: he is a board member and treasurer of the Fédération Internationale des Associations d'Études Classiques (FIEC), head of the Genoese branch of the Année philologique and a member of numerous national and international research associations.

In May 2010 he was appointed Doctor honoris causa by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and in June 2010 by the Academy of Athens as a corresponding member.
