Ivan Peries

Ivan Peries (born July 31, 1921 in Dehiwela , † February 13, 1988 ) was a Sri Lankan painter .

life and work

Ivan Peries is the son of James Francis Peries, who studied medicine in Scotland, and Ann Gertrude Winifred Jayasuria, a graduate of St. Bridget's Convent in Colombo. His brother Lester James Peries (1919–2018) was one of the most famous film directors in Sri Lanka. With a scholarship received in 1946, Peries went to London for four years to study at St John's Wood Art School . In 1953 he moved to London and some of his major works were created. Three of his paintings are: The Wave (1955), The Return (1956) and The Arrival (1959-60). The motifs of Peries were rural life and the ocean coast. Ivan Peries married Veronica Peries (née Perry) in 1955, settled in Southend-on-Sea and had four children.

Ivan Peries was a member of the Sri Lankan artist group Colombo '43 Group , including George Keyt , Justin Daraniyagala , Harold Peiris , Lionel Wendt , George Keyt (1901-1993), Harry Pieres and LTP Manjusri (1902-2002), Aubrey Collette, George Claessen, WJG Beling, Richard Gabriel, Walter Witharne and YJ Thuring.

Works by Ivan Peries were shown at the 1989 exhibition The Other Story: Asian, African and Caribbean Artists in Post-War Britain , curator Rasheed Araeen . In 2017 his work was shown at Documenta 14 .
