Ivan Vekić (2011)

Ivan Vekić (born October 18, 1938 in Poljica near Vrgorac , † December 17, 2014 in Osijek ) was a Yugoslav and Croatian politician.

In 1989 he was one of the founders of Hrvatska demokratska zajednica (HDZ). From July 1991 to April 1992 he was Croatia's Interior Minister, during the period when Croatia became independent. At that time, the Ministry of the Interior had its own paramilitary units that were involved in the Gospić massacre , among other things . Vekić was questioned by the police in 2001 in connection with the murder of the Osijek police chief , Josip Reihl-Kir , who was considered to be moderate .

In 2003 Vekić was expelled from the HDZ. For the parliamentary elections in Croatia in 2007 he stood as a candidate for the party Jedino Hrvatska - Pokret za Hrvatsku (exclusively Croatia - Movement for Croatia), which however did not succeed in entering parliament.

In August 2010 he announced the establishment of a new party called Hrvatska straža (Croatian Guard), which would, among other things, campaign for the introduction of the death penalty and for pre-military training in schools. After the founding of the party, he took over the chairmanship, which he handed over to his previous deputy, Vencel Čuljak, in January 2014 for health reasons. The party remained largely insignificant.
