Ivo Illuminati (born June 16, 1882 in Ripatransone , † September 6, 1963 in Rome ) was an Italian actor and silent film director .

Life

Illuminati obtained a law degree, but after graduating he devoted himself to the theater, where he played as a youth hero with several ensembles between 1904 and 1912, including that of Emma Gramatica and Ruggero Ruggeri . After his first experiences in many "lever de rideau" (short films with mostly comical scenes) he made his feature film debut in Emilio Ghione's Gespay, fantino e gentiluomo in 1914 and also switched behind the camera in the same year. By 1922 he had directed around thirty films, including comedies with Maria Jacobini , dramas with Leda Gys and Lucio D'Ambras made into films ; he often played the male lead himself.

When the crisis in Italian cinema spread in 1922, Illuminati went to Germany, where however it was unable to gain a foothold in the local film industry. Back in his homeland, he headed the technical department of the Istituto Luce from 1928 to 1935 and then worked as a screenwriter for some films and as assistant director for others. In 1942 he staged Il vetturale del San Gottardo together with Hans Hinrich . He then ended his career in the cinema and devoted himself to readings, stage programs and articles on theater productions.

In 2011 the Venice Film Festival dedicated a retrospective to Illuminati.
