Ivo Tijardović

Ivo Tijardović (born September 18, 1895 in Split , † March 19, 1976 in Zagreb ) was a Yugoslav composer, librettist, director and theater director.

Tijardović studied architecture and music in Vienna and then acting in Zagreb until 1922. He then began to work at the theater in his hometown as a set and costume designer, director, conductor and choreographer. These activities brought him the post of opera director at the theater in Split in 1933. After 1941 Tijardović joined the Yugoslav People's Liberation Army . After the Second World War he was director of the Croatian National Theater in Zagreb from 1945-49, and then from 1949 to 1954 director of the Zagreb Philharmonic.

Tijardović's particular merit is the creation of an independent Croatian operetta , which combined elements of the Italian-Venetian musical tradition with Slavic folklore and the dance rhythms of the twenties. After the war he wrote a musical, but then devoted himself to composing operas. Ballet music, cantatas and overtures have also come down to us.
