Ivan Bashev

Ivan Christow Baschew (also written Ivan Hristov Bashev , Bulgarian Иван Христов Башев ; born February 24, 1916 in Sofia , † December 13, 1971 in the Vitosha Mountains , Sofia) was a Bulgarian politician .

biography

Baschew, who was editor-in-chief of the daily newspaper "Narodna Mladezh" from 1944 to 1946 , joined the Bulgarian Communist Party in 1946 (Българска комунистическа партия) . In 1956 he was first Deputy Minister of Education and then Deputy Foreign Minister.

After the overthrow of the government of Anton Yugov and the Stalinist and pro- Chinese- oriented faction in the BKP under Wulko Chervenkov , he was appointed Foreign Minister in the government of Prime Minister Todor Zhivkov on November 27, 1962, as the successor to Karlo Lukanov . In 1962 he was also elected a member of the Central Committee (ZK) of the BKP. Baschew retained his post after the cabinet reshuffle in March 1966 and after the new Prime Minister Stanko Todorow took office in July 1971.

On December 13, 1971, he died in a skiing accident in the Vitosha Mountains at the gates of Sofia. According to a report by the State Department, he was alone and trapped in a sudden snowstorm , apparently injured in a fall, and died of freezing and exhaustion before being found by the mountain rescue service . Petar Mladenow became his successor as Foreign Minister .
