Ivan Stepanowytsch Marchuk (born on 12. May 1936 in Moskaliwka , Rajon Lanivtsi , Oblast Ternopil , Ukraine ) is a Ukrainian painter. He was awarded the Taras Shevchenko Prize and was accepted into the Golden Guild of the International Academy of Modern Art in Rome .

Life

Martschuk was born into the family of a weaver. After the seventh grade, he enrolled in the technical school for applied arts in Lviv and studied there from 1951 to 1956. After completing his military service , he continued his studies; this time at the Lviv University of Applied Arts, which he graduated from in 1965. From 1965 to 1968 he worked at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and from 1968 to 1984 in the Applied and Decorative Arts Factory. From 1984 he worked as a freelance painter. Between 1989 and 2001 he lived in Australia , Canada and the United States . He has lived and worked in Ukraine since 2001.

Works

Martschuk created around 4,000 works and carried out around 100 exhibitions. The USSR Painters Association did not officially recognize him until 1988, although by then he had held 15 exhibitions in different cities. The first exhibitions took place in Moscow in 1979 and 1980 .

Martschuk founded a new style of painting with Pljontanism . "Pljontaty" means "fluff" in the West Ukrainian dialect . The pictures consist of small fibers of color. In 1990 Martschuk visited Ukraine and held his first official exhibition in Kiev.

Martschuk divides his work into five periods: "The voice of my soul", "The blossom", "The landscapes", "The portrait" and "Abstractions". The paintings of each period differ in style and type. Instead of simple brushwork, he uses a new way of applying paint, which creates a kind of fabric on the canvas and thus gives the works unusual color tones and a real sheen.
