Prince Iwan Michailowitsch Obolenski ( Russian Иван Михайлович Оболенский , scientific transliteration Ivan Michajlovič Obolenskij ; born November 2, 1853 in Moscow ; † February 27, 1910 in Iwanowka , Tambov Oblast , Russian Empire and ) was a Russian general. He was Tsarist Governor General of Finland from 1904 to 1905 .

origin

Ivan Obolensky was the son of the Russian aristocrat Mikhail Alexandrowitsch Obolenski (1821-1886) and his wife, the Romanian princess Marioara Sturdza († 1895), born. Obolensky belonged to the long-established dynasty of the Rurikids .

Governor General in Finland

After the assassination of the Russian Governor General Nikolai Bobrikow in Helsinki in June 1904 , Tsar Nicholas II appointed Obolensky as the new Governor General. He held the office from August 18, 1904 to November 18, 1905. His tenure was turbulent. The Russian Revolution of 1905 led to the "Great Strike" in Finland, which paralyzed large parts of public life from October 30 to November 6. Under Obolensky's successor, Nikolai Gerhard, the unrest led to the abolition of the feudalist estates parliament and the introduction of a modern democracy in Finland.

Private life

Ivan Obolensky was married to Alexandra Nikolajewna Topornine. The couple had three sons and two daughters.
