Iwo Petrov

Iwo Lyubenow Petrow ( Bulgarian Иво Любенов Петров ) (born March 9, 1948 ) is a Bulgarian diplomat .

Life

He studied mechanical engineering and electrical engineering at the Technical University of Sofia . In 1974 he joined the Bulgarian diplomatic service. From 1982 to 1984 he graduated from the Diplomatic Academy in Moscow . From 1986 to 1990 he was employed in the Bulgarian Embassy in the Federal Republic of Germany in Bonn . In 1993 he took on the role of Bulgarian Ambassador to the United Nations in Vienna . He also represented his country there at the OSCE and other international organizations. Petrov returned to Bulgaria in 1998 and headed the European Integration Department in the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From September 20, 1999, he was United Nations Special Representative for Tajikistan and Head of the United Nations Observer Mission in Tajikistan (UNMOT). From 2002 he was back in Vienna as ambassador to the United Nations, the OSCE and other organizations. In 2005 he became Deputy Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for the Observer Mission in Georgia .

Petrov then became Bulgarian ambassador in Berlin in Germany . In 2011 he was ordered back to Bulgaria after allegations that he had worked for the Bulgarian state security during the time of the socialist dictatorship . In total, the revelations concerned 117 Bulgarian diplomats.
