Xantholinus linearis is a beetle from the family of the short-winged species (Staphylinidae).

features

The 6–8.6 mm long slender beetles have a black head and abdomen . The elytra are dark brown, the color of the pronotum can vary between dark red and black with a metallic sheen. The wing covers overlap. Legs, palpi and antennae are yellow-red. Characteristic of the species are points standing in two longitudinal rows on the pronotum. Xantholinus linearis can often only be reliably distinguished from similar species via the aedeagus (male sexual organ).

distribution

The beetle species is common in almost all of Europe. The distribution area extends in the north to Fennoscandinavia , in the south to North Africa. The species is also represented in the Canary Islands , Madeira and the Azores . In the east, the occurrence extends across Asia Minor and the Middle East to eastern Siberia . Xantholinus linearis is the most common type of the genus in Central Europe.

The beetle species was introduced in North America. The first finds on the west coast ( Vancouver Island ) date back to 1920. The species is now also represented on the east coast (first finds from Massachusetts from 1976 and 1978).

Way of life

The xerophilic beetle species prefers warm slopes with sandy soil as a habitat. The beetles can often be found in compost under rotting plant remains, but also under damp leaves and moss. The beetles predatory on other insects and arthropods. The beetles are seen all year round, most often in spring and summer.
