Ivolginsky Dazan
IVOLGINSKY DATSAN ( Russian Иволгинский Дацан , Buryat Түгэс Баясгалантай Үлзы Номой Хүрдын Хиид , "Kloster happiness and fullness of joy bring wheel of learning") is a Buddhist monastery of the Gelug -tradition of Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhism in Buryatia , Russia . The Dazan is located about 30 kilometers from the Buryat capital Ulan-Ude near the village Verkhnyaya Ivolga (Верхняя Иволга), a part of the municipality of Ivolginsk . It is the center of the Buddhist Traditional Sangha of Russia (see Sangha ) and the seat of the XXIV Pandito Hambo-Lama Damba Ayusheyev .
It was rebuilt after the destruction in the Stalinist era. The monastery is one of the largest and most important Buddhist temples in Russia. As Dazan, it is also a university. In the four faculties are philosophy , theology , Buddhist medicine and painting taught. In 2002 the body of the Hambo Lama Daschi-Dorscho Itigelow (1852-1927) was transferred here, which is considered a sacred object because of its practically indestructible condition. She was taken to a purpose-built temple that opened in 2008 as part of the Dazan.
The Buryats , linguistically and culturally a subgroup of the Mongols , traditionally profess Vajrayana Buddhism .
