Izumi Nakamitsu (中 満 泉Nakamitsu Izumi ; born 1963 ) is a Japanese diplomat and has been the head of the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) since 2017 .

education

Izumi Nakamitsu studied at Georgetown University in Washington, DC and Waseda University in Tokyo . She holds a master's degree in international relations and a bachelor's degree in law .

Career

After her studies, Nakamitsu worked at the United Nations, including in the UN reform team of the former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan , in the office of the Assistant High Commissioner for Operational Policy of the UNHCR and in UNHCR operations in the former Yugoslavia , Turkey and northern Iraq .

From 1998 to 2004 she was Chief of Staff and Director of Planning and Coordination at the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (international IDEA) in Stockholm .

From 2005 to 2008 she taught international relations at Hitotsubashi University in Tokyo and was also an advisor to the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Japanese Development Aid Agency.

In 2008 she returned to the United Nations and worked as a director in the Peacekeeping Operations Department until 2012 . UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon appointed her Assistant Secretary General. From 2016 to 2017, she was the successor to Karen Koning AbuZayd as a special advisor in the follow-up to the world summit on combating large refugee and migrant movements.

On March 29, 2017, UN Secretary-General António Guterres appointed her as Under-Secretary-General, High Representative for Disarmament Issues and Head of the UN Office for Disarmament Issues. She succeeded the Korean Kim Won-soo in these offices.

Nakamitsu is a member of the International Gender Champions (IGC) network, which advocates gender equality in international organizations.

Private life

Nakamitsu is married and has two daughters.
