Ján Vályi

Ján Vályi (born September 22, 1837 in Szabolcs County , Ukraine ; † November 19, 1911 in Prešov , Slovakia ) was Greek Catholic Bishop of the Prešov Eparchy from 1882 until his death in 1911 .

Live and act

After primary school he went to high school and studied in Debrezin , Uzhhorod and Greater Oradin . In 1857 he began to study theology in Uschorad and then studied in Vienna. On October 26, 1865, he was ordained a priest by Bishop Jozef Gaganecz in the cathedral church of St. Johann Baptist. After receiving his doctorate, he became Prefect of the Užhorodská Seminary and Director of the Seminary in 1870 . He became a professor and taught canon law and history and was under Pope Leo XIII. appointed Bishop of Prešov on October 11, 1882 as successor to Mikuláš Tóth . It was consecrated in Uschorad on May 20, 1883 by Bishop Jan Pásztélyiho .

In addition to his church work, he campaigned for the creation of middle-class schools and founded a girls' orphanage. A major concern of his was the introduction of the national language (Hungarian) in the liturgy at the beginning of the 20th century. With this request he turned to the Holy Father Leo XIII on a visit to Rome. At his urging, the Roman Curia sent priests and missionaries to look after the Greek Catholic immigrants to the United States.

He found his final resting place after 28 years as a bishop in the crypt of the temple of Prešov.
