Jozef Gaganecz, Greek Catholic Bishop of Prešov (1842–1875)

Jozef Gaganecz (born April 10, 1793 in Vyšné Tvarožci , in Bardejov , Eastern Slovakia ; † December 22, 1875 in Prešov , Slovakia ) was Greek Catholic bishop of the Prešov eparchy from 1842 until his death in 1875 .

Live and act

As the son of a border official, attended schools in Bartfeld (1801–1804), Neustadt am Zeltberg (1804–1809) and Leutschau (1809–1810). He studied philosophy in Großwardein (1810-1812) and then theology and technology (1812-1816). On March 8, 1817, Bishop Samuel Vulcan ordained him to the priesthood . In 1835 Bishop Gregor Tarkovič appointed him as vicar capitular in his cathedral chapter.

Pope Gregory XVI appointed Jozef Gaganecz on August 2, 1842 Bishop of Prešov. The Greek Catholic Bishop of Mukacheve , Basil Popovich , donated him the episcopal ordination on June 25, 1843 in the imperial chapel in Vienna in the presence of the imperial family. Co- consecrator was Johann Michael Leonhard , the bishop of St. Pölten , previously auxiliary bishop in Vienna .

He arranged the finances of the eparchy, had a new iconostasis built into the cathedral church, rebuilt the episcopal residence and had an alumni school built in a monastery.

He was honored by Emperor Franz Josef . Pope Pius IX appointed him in 1868 as papal assistant to the throne .

He died after a short illness and found his final resting place in the crypt of the Prešov Cathedral Church.
