Gregor Tarkovič

Gregor Tarkovič (born November 21, 1745 in strips, in the Bereg , Transcarpathia , Ukraine ; † January 16, 1841 in Prešov , Slovakia ) was Greek Catholic bishop of the Prešov eparchy from 1816 until his death in 1841 .

As the son of a cantor and grandson of a Greek Catholic priest, he attended Latin school and grammar school in Uzhhorod . After graduating from high school, he studied philosophy and then theology in Vienna. On January 1, 1779, he was ordained a priest in Mukacheve by Bishop Andrei Bačinský . On March 13, 1816, Emperor Franz I appointed him as the first bishop of the newly created diocese of Prešov in 1815. Signed by Pope Pius VII on September 18, 1818 , the Holy See confirmed the nomination on September 26, 1881. On June 17, 1821 Gregor Tarkovič was installed in his diocese in the presence of the cathedral chapter.

He had the difficult task of organizing his newly created diocese. He founded theological schools, seminaries, priestly training, cared about the prisoners in prisons and prison camps and their spiritual needs.

He found his final resting place in the crypt of the Prešov Cathedral.
