János Hajnal

János Hajnal (born August 27, 1913 in Budapest , † October 9, 2010 in Rome ) was a Hungarian-Italian painter and graphic artist .

Hajnal studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest , then in Frankfurt , Stockholm and Rome. He began his artistic career with book illustrations. When he was eighteen he traveled to Florence for the first time to study Italian art. In 1948 he finally moved to Rome, where he concentrated on stained glass and mosaics. Ten years later he was granted Italian citizenship.

He created u. a. Stained glass windows of the Vatican Audience Hall and the Cathedral of Naples .

In 1998 János Hajnal was awarded the Cross of Merit of the Hungarian Republic . In 2002 he was appointed Commendatore dell'Ordine al merito della Repubblica by President Ciampi .

Giovanni Hajnal is also famous for his stained glass for church windows in the Cathedral of Milan and in many important churches in Italy and Switzerland (Lugano, see literature). Among other things, he designed stamps for the Vatican. He and his family were friends with the Zurich artist Ruth Steinegger in Freienstein ZH and her family, who had previously lived in Lucerne (Kriens). From there he also designed various works of art in central Switzerland, such as the large-scale mosaics on the facades of the Hippotel inn in Hämikon-Berg near Hildisrieden (Lucerne).
