Jäger und Scout , also called Jäger + Scout , is a card game by the German game designer Gerhard Hecht for two people. The game was released in 2014 by Kosmos Spiele in the series Games for Two . In the game each player leads a tribe of Stone Age people and has to secure raw materials, food and holy places for his people with the characters available to him.

Theme and equipment

The game is a competition between two tribes of stone age people who are made up of different tribal members. The player tries to secure as much raw materials and food as possible for the survival of his tribe with the properties of his character cards and the conquest of location and hunting area cards. The winner is the player who first reaches 24 victory points.

In addition to the game instructions, the game material consists of:

  • two tribal cards,
  • two victory point stones,
  • 10 tribal members (5 black, 5 white),
  • 24 character cards,
  • 31 cards with items,
  • 18 wilderness cards,
  • 18 maps with hunting areas,
  • 30 consumption stones,
  • 16 hunger tokens,

For the game variant "Holy Places" there are also six double-sided cards with Holy Places. Eight of the “special characters” are also only used in the advanced version of the game.

Style of play

Introductory game

To prepare for the introductory game, the six cards “Holy Places” and the “Special Characters” with the exception of three scouts and one shaman are sorted out and removed from the game. The game board is placed in the middle of the game table. The three scouts are drawn from the character cards and three shamans are placed face up in three columns. Each player receives five tribal members and one tribal card. He lays down the tribal card face up in front of him and places two of the tribal member figures on the card. A third tribe member is placed on the game board and the remaining two tribe members are placed next to the game board as a supply. The victory point stones begin on the field “10” on the victory point track on the game board and are placed there. In addition, each player receives a set of cards made up of a hunter, a scout, a chief, a collector and an offspring, as well as two item cards, which he places face down in front of him. The remaining item cards are shuffled and placed next to the game board as a draw pile. In addition, each player receives two hunger tokens, which he places next to his tribal card. Finally, the location cards wilderness and hunting areas are each shuffled individually and placed in a face-down draw pile. Two wilderness cards are drawn and laid out face up below the game board.

Possible actions per turn
  • play a character
  • Remove any number of tribe members from location cards: get raw materials, hand in hunger tokens, create objects
  • Carry out sunset or intermediate scoring

Beginning with a starting player (according to the game instructions, the player with the most hair), the two players take turns making their respective moves. Each player can choose between three possible actions on his turn:

  • Play character card: With the help of character cards, the player can, among other things, place his own tribal members on location cards in order to obtain raw materials, explore new location cards, take character cards from the display or win new tribal members. When a player wants to play a character card, he selects one of his hand cards and follows the instructions given on the card. Then he places the card in the column with the fewest character cards in the display on top of the cards already on display there. If there are several columns with the same number of cards, he chooses one of the columns.

The following character cards are available in the introductory game:

map Actions number
Hunter Place a consumption stone on each hunting area. Draw a hunting area and place 0 to 3 tribe members on it. 02
Scout Place a consumption stone on each wilderness. Draw a wilderness and place 0 to 1 tribe member on any location. 02
Collector Place 0 to 4 tribe members on any location. 02
chief Drag an item. Place 0 to 2 tribe members on any location. 02
offspring Place a tribe member from the camp on your tribal card. If you have hunger tokens, take another one now. 02
Scouts Place three consumption stones on three different locations. Draw a wilderness and place 0 to 2 tribe members on any location. 03
shaman Drag two items or take an exposed character. 03
  • Taking back tribe members from location cards: By playing certain character cards, a player can place tribe members on location cards labeled “Wilderness” or “Hunting Areas” (see above). When he brings tribe members back, he can take a raw material (meat, hide, stone, wood, clay and fruit) available on the location card for each of the tribe members and covers this with a consumption stone. The raw materials are used directly for various actions:
    • For each piece of meat that a player receives, he may discard a hunger tile.
    • For every two skins the player may place a new tribe member from the supply on the cave camp on the game board.
    • The player can create objects for other raw materials by playing and paying for his face-down “object” card. The players can usually get victory points through the items and carry out additional actions.
  • Carry out sunset: If a player cannot (or does not want to) play any more character cards and does not want to bring back any tribal members, he can carry out a sunset and thus an intermediate scoring. The player receives one victory point for each of his tribal members who are on his tribal card or on location cards. For each hunger token he owns and, in the case of early scoring, for each character card still in hand, he must subtract one point. The determined victory points are settled on the victory point track on the game board, although they can also be negative due to hunger tokens. In this case a player can never have less than 0 victory points. Then the player takes a hunger tile for each of his tribe members on his tribe card and on location cards to the ones he already has. If he has eight hunger tokens, he must discard a tribe member and may also discard three hunger tokens. At the end of the scoring, the player takes six character cards from the display in hand. He may choose cards from one or more columns, but may only take the exposed cards. If the player still has cards in hand after an early scoring, the six cards are added.

The game ends as soon as a player with his victory point marker has reached 24 or more victory points and thus the target field (hand). If he has more than 24 victory points. If this is the starting player, the other player can still make one full turn. If he also reaches the target field, the player who has passed the target on the scoring track wins. In the event of a tie, the tied player wins.

Normal game

The normal game builds on the introductory game and supplements it with additional rules and options.

In preparation for the game, the tribal card is used with the “Sunset Normal Game” side. In addition to the five character cards, each player receives a shaman as a starting character. All “special characters” are shuffled, six cards are drawn randomly from these and laid out in three columns of two cards each. The remaining six cards are removed from the game. Three cards from the “Holy Places” are laid out face up next to the game board, the remaining three cards are also removed from the game. The victory point stones start on space “3” of the victory point list. The starting player only receives one item, the other player receives two items.

As in the introductory game, character cards are laid out and tribal members are placed on the location cards in order to obtain raw materials. Additional character cards are:

map Actions number
Fisherman Put down two hunger tokens. Drag two items, select one, and then drop the other. 02
Basket weaver Drag an item. Put down as many objects as you want and draw the same number of new objects. Get one victory point. 02
Fire guard Place all tribe members on any location or place a character on the display. 02
Tracker Place a consumption stone on each wilderness and each hunting area. Draw a wilderness or a hunting area. Place 0 to 2 tribe members on any location. 02

The scoring at sunset is also carried out as in the introductory game. In contrast to this, the player has to discard all but one of the hidden and not yet created objects that he has in front of him after he has received his victory points. Then he may take 5, 6 or 7 exposed characters of his choice.

The holy places represent an additional component. The players may occupy these like the wilderness and the hunting areas with members of the tribe and use the special functions of the places according to the specified "trigger". Any number of tribe members can stand on a holy place - however, all tribe members must be from one player. As soon as the number of tribe members of a fellow player exceeds that of the opponent, these are expelled and put back on the tribal card of the fellow player. In order to be able to use a holy place, the player must leave at least one tribe member there on his turn.
