The Jägerhof is a monument in the Wilhelmsthal district of the Gerstungen municipality in the Wartburg district in Thuringia , 8.5 km south of Eisenach .

history

The building was erected in its original form in 1743 as the “Zum Auerhahn” castle inn of the Wilhelmsthal hunting lodge about 200 m to the west . In 1938 the facility was rebuilt as the "Gaujägerhof Thuringia". This was conceived as a representative assembly and training center with the financial and organizational commitment of the Thuringian hunters' associations and, as the fourth Reichsjägerhof, was to serve the Thuringian hunters as a starting point for hunts in the former ducal Wilhelmsthal hunting district. In 1940 the name "Zum Auerhahn" existed. From 1942 the property was used as a military hospital and the same year began to demolish the historic castle inn. After the end of the war, it was used as the "Auerhahn State Inn" from 1946 until a pedagogical college for new teachers was set up on the site in 1947 , which was followed in 1957 by the district youth school of the FDJ .

In 1975 the facility was converted into the Wilhelmsthal Recreational Home of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany and from then on served for the recreation of privileged citizens of the GDR regime. The bronze figures of the Jägerhof have meanwhile been moved to the Kartausgarten in Eisenach, where they can still be viewed today. After the fall of the Wall in 1989, the inn was open to all those seeking relaxation as the “Haus Wilhelmsthal” hotel with a swimming pool until it closed in 1998.

After that, the property stood empty and fell into disrepair under the care of the Marksuhl Forestry Office. Large parts of the interior furnishings, largely from the 1930s, fell victim to illegal sales, theft and vandalism.

The building has been privately owned since 2008. The owner immediately took important steps to save the monument and the outbuildings from further deterioration. The main view facing the B 19 federal road has been restored in accordance with the preservation order and extensions and conversions from 1975 dismantled. From 2010 to 2015, the “Wanderrast Zum Auerhahn” snack bar was run in the “Alte Wache” adjacent building. In 2012 a game reserve was set up with the stock of Sika deer and thus linked to the traditional gate keeping of deer in Wilhelmsthal. On the Open Monument Day 2013, 2015 and the "117th German Hiking Day" 2017, the Auerhahn / Jägerhof inn could be visited in public tours. In 2019, an excursion to Wilhelmsthal took place at the federal conference for agricultural game keeping. The usage concept in connection with game keeping and tourism was presented by the owner and game keeper. District Administrator Reinhard Krebs presented the Wartburg District Monument Protection Prize for the rescue and development of a viable utilization concept for the former hunter's farm "Zum Auerhahn" in Wilhelmsthal .
