Life
The son of a farmer studied at the University of Copenhagen , where he was influenced by Georg Brandes and Nietzsche's philosophy .
His best-known drama is Bjærg-Eyvind og hans hustru (1911, German: Berg-Eyvind and his wife ), which tells of the outlawed Fjalla-Eyvindur and his wife Halla. The sad lullaby Sofðu unga ástin mín (Sleep my young love), known in Iceland, comes from this piece . The template was taken up in 1918 by the Swedish director Victor Sjöström and filmed with himself in the lead role (Swedish original title: Berg-Ejvind och hans hustru ).
Almost as well known is his play Galdra-Loftur (Loftur the Magician ); the Danish title is Ønsket (The Wish). It was created in 1915. Loftur, who believes in the magical power of desire, tries to achieve infinite power through magic; power becomes an end in itself and he gets caught in the dilemma between good and evil.
Jóhann Sigurjónsson died of tuberculosis at the age of 39 .
