Joseph Brummer (born October 22, 1883 in Sombor , Austria-Hungary , † April 14, 1947 in New York ) was an art dealer from Hungary who was active in Paris and New York.

Joseph Brummer initially wanted to become a sculptor and went to Paris to study. Here studied with Jules-Félix Coutan and Auguste Rodin , attended the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and came into contact with numerous artists. In 1909 Joseph Brummer had his portrait painted by Henri Rousseau . However, he gave up his artistic activity and opened an art shop, the Galerie Brummer, in Paris with his brothers Ernest and Imre in 1906 . Joseph and Imre Brummer († 1928) went to New York at the outbreak of World War I , where they opened a branch of the gallery (Brummer Gallery). Joseph remained its leader. From 1940 until his death, he was supported by his brother Ernest, who had also moved to New York after the German invasion. The gallery was closed in 1949 and its holdings were auctioned in several auctions.

Joseph Brummer brokered numerous, especially medieval, works of art for American private collectors and museums (especially the Metropolitan Museum of Art ) and is considered one of the most important art dealers of the first half of the 20th century.
