Jörg Baur (born July 17, 1930 in Tübingen ) is a German Protestant theologian .

Live and act

Baur studied Protestant theology in Tübingen , Erlangen and Göttingen . From 1958 to 1962 he was a repetitionist at the Evangelical Monastery in Tübingen , from 1964 to 1969 pastor in Leuzendorf near Rothenburg ob der Tauber . Baur received his doctorate from Paul Althaus in Erlangen, where he later also completed his habilitation. Since 1969 he has been professor of systematic theology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and since 1978 at the Georg August University in Göttingen . He has been retired since 1997.

Baur, who is considered to be a connoisseur of Luther's theology and Lutheran orthodoxy up to the 18th century, sees himself as a conscious Lutheran who primarily endeavors to bring the Lutheran theological heritage into the issues of modernity. He is critical of the ecumenical movement that he believes is instrumental in church politics. He abstained from the final vote on the Leuenberg Agreement between Lutheran and Reformed churches, on which he himself had worked on the articles on baptism and Christology, because of unionist interpretations. In addition, he denied - with many other Protestant theologians - the viability of the so-called Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification .

Baur's point of view is based on the conviction that the Reformation knowledge of the justification of the godless “for the sake of human needs” should be proclaimed in full. The interdisciplinary orientation of his work is documented, among other things, by his contributions to the Goethe manual.
