Jörg Litwinschuh-Barthel (born August 12, 1968 in Weiskirchen / Saar ) is a German media scientist and executive director of the Federal Magnus Hirschfeld Foundation . Litwinschuh-Barthel represents the rights of homosexual people in Germany in various institutions and functions.

Life

Litwinschuh-Barthel spent his childhood in the Merzig-Wadern district in Saarland and graduated from the Staatliches Hochwald-Gymnasium in Wadern in 1988. After completing his degree in media management at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media , he worked in the areas of retail (Metro / Kaufhof Warenhaus AG), e-commerce consulting (iXL Germany GmbH) and ticketing / live entertainment (CTS Eventim AG) in leading positions before he took over the management of the LSVD Landesverband Berlin-Brandenburg eV in 2002 . In 2005 Litwinschuh-Barthel founded the Queer Nations eV initiative together with Jan Feddersen with the aim of re- establishing the Institute for Sexology , founded by Magnus Hirschfeld , in a modern form. In 2007 he became a fundraiser and press spokesman for the German AIDS Federation .

After working as a freelance communications consultant (Litwinschuh Kommunikationberatung), the then Federal Minister of Justice Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger appointed him chairman of the Federal Magnus Hirschfeld Foundation in 2011. Litwinschuh-Barthel brought his project “Football against Homophobia”, founded in 2009, to the Federal Magnus Hirschfeld Foundation and transferred the trademark rights to the foundation. Litwinschuh-Barthel has been campaigning against right-wing populism for many years. He is a "fiery advocate of marriage for everyone" (Saarbrücker Zeitung). Together with the head of the Federal Anti-Discrimination Agency at the time, Christine Lüders, Litwinschuh-Barthel campaigned for the annulment of the sentences under Section 175 of the Criminal Code and for the rehabilitation and compensation of the victims.

In 2019, Litwinschuh-Barthel was the project manager of the scientific inventory of conversion treatments together with Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn for the planned legal ban on so-called "conversion therapies".

Jörg Litwinschuh-Barthel is married and lives with his husband in Berlin.

Controversy

As managing director of the LSVD and press spokesman for Deutsche Aidshilfe , Litwinschuh-Barthel regularly spoke on controversial topics. In 2002 he filed a criminal complaint against Norbert Geis because of his statements to homosexuals. For many years Jörg Litwinschuh-Barthel criticized the attitudes of the Catholic Church - in particular its sexual morality. He described the arrest of the singer Nadja Benaissa and the way the authorities dealt with her HIV infection in 2009 as a “modern form of witch hunt”.

As a board member of the Federal Magnus Hirschfeld Foundation, Litwinschuh-Barthel was also exposed to criticism. In October 2016, for example, AfD politicians attacked sex education workshops in Thuringia sponsored by the foundation. Litwinschuh-Barthel replied that the right-wing populists would try to discredit diversity education and anti-discrimination work through baseless accusations.

In the summer of 2018, a controversy followed, mainly on social media channels , because Litwinschuh-Barthel published a photo with the controversial US ambassador Richard Grenell . Litwinschuh-Barthel apologized for this one day later, pointing out that he would still remain in dialogue with the US ambassador.
