Jörgen Nilsen Schaumann

Jörgen Nilsen Schaumann (* 1879 , † 1953 ) was a Swedish dermatologist .

Life

Jörgen Nilsen Schaumann studied medicine at Lund University and graduated in Stockholm in 1907 . He then worked at the University Laboratory for Bacteriology in Copenhagen and from 1908 in the St. Göran Hospital . In 1912 he was hired as a doctor at the Finsen Institute in Copenhagen, where he remained until the end of his career. His research areas were tuberculosis and X-ray therapy.

Schaumann differentiated the various syndromes of sarcoid and defined this clinical picture as a general disease. His corresponding work entitled "Sur le lupus pernio ", which he submitted in November 1914, was awarded by the Societé Francaise de Dermatologie . The Schaumann bodies or Schaumann bodies occurring in sarcoidosis are named after him. These are small inclusions within giant Langhans cells . Because of its contribution to research into sarcoid, this disease is also known as Besnier-Boeck-Schaumann's disease .

In 1939 Jörgen Nilsen Schaumann received the title of professor and in 1940 he was awarded the Jubilee Prize of the Society of Swedish Physicians (" Svenska Läkaresällskapet "). In 1946 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Sorbonne University in Paris and a corresponding member of the " l'Académie nationale de Médecine " the following year . In 1946, Schaumann retired, but worked for another seven years researching benign lymphogranulomatosis until he died of a heart attack in 1953 .
