history
The Jewish Garden , which was probably laid out in front of the walls of Prague's Old Town at the beginning of the 13th century, is considered the oldest Jewish cemetery in Prague . In 1478 it was closed by King Wladislaw II Jagiello and left in favor of the cemetery in the Josefov district . This was in use until 1787 and is now one of the most famous Jewish cemeteries in Europe . Despite its small area (approx. 1 hectare) it contains over 12,000 tombstones and probably the bones of 100,000 people. When emperor Joseph II banned burials in the city center in Prague , the Jewish community began to bury their dead in the cemetery in the Žižkov district in 1787 . This burial site was founded in 1680 and was mainly used during the plague epidemics (1679–1680 and 1713–1714). At the end of the 19th century, a municipal necropolis consisting of 12 individual cemeteries was created for Prague in the area of Olšany , which was designed for two million burials. B. also contains sections for Orthodox and Islamic believers. Immediately next to this complex, the Jewish community acquired a plot of land over 100,000 m² in size and in 1890 established the new cemetery with space for around 100,000 graves, of which around 25,000 are currently occupied. In addition to these burial sites, there are other Jewish cemeteries in Prague.
