A Jewish community in Nancy in Meurthe-et-Moselle in the French region of Lorraine has existed since the Middle Ages . The modern Jewish community emerged from 1721.

history

About ten Jewish families are attested in Nancy around 1470 . During the siege of the city by Charles the Bold (1433–1477) in 1476, the Jews were expelled from the city. In the 16th century, Jewish families were again passed down, and it was not until 1721 that four Jewish families were officially allowed to settle in the city.

In 1808, 759 Jewish residents were counted in Nancy. The Jewish community in Nancy, like everywhere in France, did not develop unhindered until the 19th century, and many Jews moved from the rural communities who helped develop the new industries such as weaving, spinning, shoe-making and the steel industry. The Jewish residential area was located near the synagogue , between the Rue du Grand Rabbin Haguenauer and the Rue des Ponts.

Today the Jewish community in Nancy has around 450 families.

National Socialist Persecution

Due to the timely warning by French police officers, around 300 Jews in Nancy escaped arrest and deportation by the German occupiers in 1942.

In the Préville cemetery, built in 1840, there is an area for the burial of the dead of Jewish faith . The cemetery is at 2, avenue de Boufflers. A memorial at the entrance to the cemetery commemorates the 700 Jewish citizens who fell victim to the genocide of the National Socialist regime .
