The Jewish Adult Education Center in Munich was founded in 1983 as part of the Jewish cultural center of the Jewish Community in Munich and Upper Bavaria - as the second institution of its kind (after Berlin , founded in 1962, on Fasanenstrasse) in the entire German-speaking area.

The opening up to urban society in the early 1980s with a generally accessible offer was a signal for a new beginning and at the same time a symbol of the new self-image of German Jewish communities. As a renewed establishment of Jewish culture in the land of the perpetrators, which was only seen as a transit station after 1945. But there was also a new generation on the non-Jewish side who wanted to know more about recent German history, who questioned the attitude of their own parents and also asked questions about the German-Jewish relationship.

The educational and cultural program offered here with contemporary content and topics was a reaction to the new social situation of the Jews in Germany in the early 1980s . The need for information as well as controversial discussions and exchanges were met.

Today's educational and cultural offerings still follow these ideas and make it possible to deal with religious philosophy , Jewish history and everyday and culinary culture . There is also the opportunity to learn the relevant languages. This is supplemented and expanded by the cultural program of the Jewish Cultural Center. Together, the two institutions do not want to convey Judaism as part of a long past epoch, but rather present it as a living culture .

In 2007 the Jewish Cultural Center and the Jewish Adult Education Center were able to move into the community center of the Israelite Community in Munich and Upper Bavaria. You are now part of the Jewish Center on Munich's Jakobsplatz .
