Memorial for the Holocaust victims of Chotyn in the city's Jewish cemetery

The Chotyn Jewish Cemetery is a Jewish cemetery in the north of the city of Chotyn in the Ukrainian Oblast of Chernivtsi .

history

The Jewish community of Chotyns dates back to the 16th century. Until the beginning of the 20th century, the city had mainly Russian-speaking and Jewish residents. The last pre-war census of 1930 showed population ratios of 38% Jews, 37% Russians , 15% Ukrainians and 9% Romanians . Before the Second World War , about 19,000 Jewish residents lived in the city. There were 36 synagogues , Jewish schools and libraries for them. As a result of the Hitler-Stalin Pact , Chotyn was annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940. On July 7, 1941, the city was captured by German and Romanian troops. Two thousand male Jews were shot in the city's main square, which resulted in more shootings, massacres, and deportations to camps. Only 500 Chotyn Jews survived the war.

The population structure in Chotyn was drastically changed by the Second World War and the Holocaust, as well as the subsequent Stalinist terror. Very few Jews still live in the city today. Many emigrated to Israel after the collapse of the Soviet Union . Currently 72% of the population describe themselves as Ukrainians, 16% as Russians, 8% as Jews or Hebrews and 4% as Romanians.

The cemetery is located about half a kilometer north of the outskirts of Chotyn, directly on the T2610 / T2614 road towards Ataky . It is located near the Christian cemetery on the eastern side of the road towards the Dniester and is surrounded by agricultural land. There are graves from the 19th and 20th centuries in the cemetery. It has existed in its current borders since 1939 and is now around 100 × 200 meters in size. The last funeral took place in 1990. The cemetery does not include any mass graves, but there is a memorial for the Jews of Chotyn who were murdered in the Holocaust.

The US Commission for the Preservation of America's Heritage Abroad added the cemetery to the list of American cultural heritage sites abroad on the basis of a bilateral agreement with Ukraine.
