history

The origins of a modern Jewish community in Gleicherwiesen go back to the year 1680, when four Jews were allowed to settle for the first time. In 1833 the place had 189 Jewish inhabitants, in 1875 there were 233 and in 1925 there were 46. The last six were deported in 1942. A synagogue was opened in 1787 and the community laid out the Jewish cemetery in 1846. The catchment area of the burial ground included the Jewish communities in Gleicherwiesen and, from 1885, Simmershausen . Before that, the deceased were mostly buried in Kleinbardorf . The last burial was in 1940.
