The Lukjaniwskyj Jewish Cemetery ( Ukrainian Лук'янівський єврейський цвинтар / Lukjaniwskyj jewrejskyj zwyntar ) was a Jewish cemetery in the Ukrainian capital Kiev . It is located north of the Lukjanivska military cemetery near the Dorohoshytschi metro station .

history

The cemetery established at Babyn Jar in 1894 was over 20 hectares . The architectural design of the cemetery was carried out by the Kiev city architect Vladimir Nikolayev . A large part of the Jewish cemetery was surrounded by a wall, which was broken through by a stylish entrance archway.

In 1937 the cemetery was closed for funerals. During the German occupation of Kiev, there were mass killings in the immediate vicinity (Babyn Yar), especially of the Jewish population, by the occupiers. According to witnesses, tombstones and metal fences of the Jewish cemetery were used in 1943 as building material for the pyres that were used to burn the people killed in Babyn Yar. Accordingly, the condition of the cemetery was poor after the Second World War . Finally, on June 26, 1962 (№ 988), the Kiev city council decided to remove the 26.9 hectare necropolis . The sacred buildings were demolished and most of the graves and tombstones destroyed or looted. Today, a large part of the cemetery is built over by a television station, only fragments of the cemetery itself have survived.
