Jewish cemetery (La Bastide-Clairence)
The Jewish cemetery in La Bastide-Clairence , a commune in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine , was established in the early 17th century.
history
Jewish refugees from Spain and Portugal settled in Bayonne and the surrounding villages at the end of the 16th century . About 70 to 80 Jewish families lived in La Bastide-Clairence during the 17th century. They formed a relatively independent community within the village and were called "Nation juive" (Jewish nation).
A separate Jewish cemetery was created at the beginning of the 17th century. In the 1960s, 62 graves were counted, the oldest gravestone ( Mazewa ) is from 1620 and the youngest from 1785. The family names are often Dacosta, Henriquez, Lopez, Nunez, Depas and Alvares.
Today the cemetery belongs to the Consistoire Bayonne . It has been listed as a monument historique since 1988 .
