The Marisfeld Jewish Cemetery is located in the Thuringian town of Marisfeld in the Hildburghausen district .

history

The origins of the Jewish community in Marisfeld go back to 1678, when Messrs Marschalk von Ostheim first allowed protection Jews to settle there. In 1822 the town had 121 Jewish inhabitants, in 1865 there were around 200 and in 1925 13th. The last of them were deported in 1942 .

There was probably a Jewish cemetery as early as the 17th century. The community laid out today's cemetery after the landowner Baron von Stockmar acquired the property in 1848. The dead of the Jewish community of Themar were also buried here. On April 15, 1910 and in the 1930s, the cemetery was desecrated. The last burial was in 1938. The current owner is the Jewish State Community of Thuringia .

Location and characterization

The listed cemetery complex is located southeast of the village on the Guhligsberg on very moist ground. The rectangular plot is enclosed with a wooden fence. The right gate post at the main entrance bears the designation 1853. On an area of ​​20 ares , originally 40 ares, 158 graves can still be recognized. There are around 134 tombstones ( Mazewa ) and fragments. The older ones are only labeled in Hebrew and show symbols such as the Star of David , blessing hands and the Levite jug . The younger tombstones also have German inscriptions.
