history

The cemetery was rebuilt in 1990 as a replacement for the former burial place in the lost town of Alt-Garzweiler. There are 31 tombstones and 57 graves from Alt-Garzweiler on the site. In the course of the demolition of the old town, bones were found that probably come from an even older Jewish cemetery in Alt-Garzweiler. These were reburied in October 1998 in (Neu-) Garzweiler.

The Jewish cemetery in Alt-Garzweiler

The town of Alt-Garzweiler no longer exists due to the lignite mining . The Jewish cemetery there was occupied from before 1821 until 1962. There were 31 tombstones that are now in the new cemetery in (Neu-) Garzweiler.
