history

Levy gravestone from 1813

The Jewish cemetery in Grabow is located in the northwest of the city on a hill between the streets Trotzenburg and Neu Karstädter Weg. It was first mentioned around 1790 . The oldest preserved stone marks the grave of Henriette Levy, who died in December 1813. Originally the cemetery was surrounded by a wall.

Apart from minor damage, the cemetery survived the Nazi era unscathed.

Restored tombstones

The cemetery in its current form on the hill called the vineyard no longer corresponds to its original appearance. It was reduced to today's 286 m². As the wall was in disrepair, it was removed and replaced by an iron fence. In 1952 the tombstones were cleared for the purpose of redesigning the cemetery. The 17 tombstones are now arranged in a semicircle and are therefore no longer in their original position. One of the most beautiful stones has the restored inscription: HERE REST DOVE ARNHEIM, BORN SIMON PERFECT IN HER 7O. YEARS OF LIFE ON JANUARY 26, 1847 YOUR EARTH CAREER. CALM YOUR ASHES!

In 1988, individual stones were doused with gasoline and infected. The local master stonemason, Bernhard Senff, reconstructed the inscriptions on the tombstones.

The city of Grabow took care of the cemetery. The entrance gate is decorated with a Star of David .
