The Idstein Jewish Cemetery

The Idstein Jewish cemetery is a Jewish cemetery in Idstein in the Rheingau-Taunus district in Hesse . It is located northeast of the city on the right side of Escher Straße.

history

After the dead of the Idstein Jewish community were buried in the collective cemetery in Esch , a separate cemetery was set up in Idstein in 1874. The cemetery is surrounded by a stone wall and has an iron gate on the narrow side.

During the November pogroms of 1938 the cemetery was devastated and the tombstones were scattered in the forest. In 1942 the cemetery was bought by the Kalmenhof health and care facility , which at that time was an intermediate facility of the Hadamar Nazi killing center . As a result, victims of the National Socialist euthanasia crimes were also buried here.

The Jewish Asset Management took over the cemetery in 1945. The tombstones of the approx. 50 to 75 graves were placed on the inside of the cemetery wall and a memorial was erected from the remaining tombstone quarry.
