The Jewish cemetery Oestrich-Winkel is a Jewish cemetery in the district of the city of Oestrich-Winkel in the Rheingau-Taunus district in Hesse . It is considered to be the oldest preserved Jewish cemetery in the Rheingau .

history

According to an inscription on a memorial stone from the 2nd half of the 20th century, the cemetery was first occupied in 1673, but a tombstone indicates that the deceased died as early as March 13, 1625. The cemetery was the only Jewish cemetery in the Rheingau that was used by many Jewish communities until 1890, when some of them had their own cemeteries. The last assignment took place in 1974. After deducting two memorial stones, there are 145 gravestones in the cemetery . The memorial stone for Anne Frank was created by Anton Haust around 1970 .

Geographical location

The cemetery is located in the Oestrich district just under two kilometers north of the village and a few hundred meters west of the Hallgarten district on the boundary between the vineyards and the Solderbach valley . The 5215 square meter cemetery parcel has a steep, south-west exposed hillside between 220 and 240 meters high with a lot of old trees. The cemetery can be reached from Oestrich via an extension of the Roman road , which is an agricultural path that leads uphill through the vineyards to the Philippsburg hunting lodge . Above the white sanctuary at the large flood diversion of the federal road 42 , a dirt road branches off to the right to the Solderbach and after about 500 meters leads to the locked gate of the cemetery.
