Jewish cemetery (Kastellaun)
The Jewish cemetery in Kastellaun in the Rhein-Hunsrück district ( Rhineland-Palatinate ) has been a protected cultural monument since 1992 , it is located on Hasselbacher Strasse, at the confluence of Graf-Moltke-Strasse, about 500 meters outside the city.
history
The faithful of the Jewish community, which was officially founded around 1892 and comprised 90 members in 1924 (the first Jewish couple is attested to in 1862), built their own cemetery as early as 1879. It has an area of 8.50 acres . Today there are still 35 tombstones ( mazewot ). The oldest gravestone is from 1885. By 1938 the number of members decreased to around 20 to 30. The last funeral took place in 1939.
Commemoration
In 1986 a memorial stone for the town of Kastellaun was erected in the cemetery . It says on the stone:
“In memory of the members of Jewish families from Kastellaun, who were expelled from their homeland, deported or murdered during the years of National Socialist rule. The synagogue was on Eifelstrasse. It was destroyed on November 10, 1938. The citizens of the city of Kastellaun. "
