history

Tombstone

The Tost Jews , who built a synagogue in the old town of Tost in 1836 , came from the nearby town of Langendorf . There they continued to have their deceased relatives buried in the Jewish cemetery . In the first half of the 19th century, the Jews had a cemetery built in Tost.

Shortly after the Second World War , around 1,000 victims of the NKVD camp in Tost were buried in the Jewish cemetery .

The cemetery is now surrounded by a wall. Eight standing Jewish tombstones have been preserved to this day. They have inscriptions in German and Hebrew. Among them are the gravestones of Friedericke Fränkel, Ernestine Wachsmann and Jenny Wolff. There are no more funerals in the cemetery today. In 2006, on the initiative of a history teacher from Wielowieś, the cemetery was tended by local students.
