The Ueckermünde Jewish Cemetery in Ueckermünde in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is a protected architectural monument .

description

The cemetery is located southwest of the old town in the then Rosenmühl district on Liepgartener Straße (K 12) to the then branching off Wiesenstraße. It is around 400 to 500 m² in size. Jewish cemeteries were designated as burial places on the official maps and were signed with an L instead of a †. Here, however, the lettering with the abbreviation is missing, but the L is very clear. Most of the time, the burial places were created far outside the cities. Here the cemetery was located in an area of brickworks, lime kilns and clay pits.

history

The first Jewish cemetery in Ueckermünde was laid out in 1821. After the community had expanded, a new space was acquired on Wiesenstrasse in 1867. It could be used as a cemetery until 1938, when it was devastated and only converted into a memorial in 1961. At that time the stones were laid in a row. In 1987 the cemetery was restored as far as possible. There are still 12 tombstones and a memorial stone.
