location and size
The Jewish cemetery of Wallau is between Lange Straße (country road L 3368) and Hesse Street, near the B3 . Its size is 3142 m². 185 graves have been preserved. In the older, eastern part there are a number of old, partly illegible tombstones ( mazewot ) from the 17th and 18th centuries. The newer, western part contains a memorial stone for the Jewish fallen in World War I and a plaque with the names of 34 missing soldiers.
The horticultural arrangement was made with a two-row row of linden trees from west to east. At the intersection is the square surrounded by yew trees with the memorial stone.
history
In 1536 there was the first written mention of Jews in Wallau. The funerals initially took place in the Jewish cemetery in Niederhofheim . Today's cemetery was built at the end of the 18th century at the latest. Around 1842 the cemetery was expanded to include the new, western area. The last burial took place in 1940 (Sally Schönfeld).
