The Jewish cemetery Wangen is a Jewish cemetery in Wangen , a district of the municipality of Öhningen in the district of Konstanz in Baden-Württemberg . The cemetery is a protected cultural monument and is located northeast above the village in the forest ( Gewann Am Hardtbühl ).

history

The Jewish community of Wangen first buried its dead in the Jewish cemetery in Gailingen . In 1827 a separate cemetery was set up, which was expanded in 1889 and surrounded with a wall in 1901. Today the cemetery has an area of 30.82 acres and there are still 149 tombstones ( mazewot ). The oldest gravestone is from 1847 and the last burial took place in 1971: buried were "the last Jew of the village", according to the gravestone inscription (see picture), the doctor Nathan Wolf (1882–1970) and his sister Selma Wolf (1881–1971 ).

The cemetery, which was left to decay after the deportation of the last Wangen Jews in 1940 and closed by the National Socialists in September 1941 , has since been devastated and desecrated three more times, in 1953, 1957 and most recently in 1992.
