Jewish cemetery in Neudenau

The Jewish cemetery in Neudenau in the Heilbronn district in northern Baden-Württemberg goes back to one of the oldest Jewish cemeteries in southwest Germany.

history

Jews are first mentioned in Neudenau in the late 13th century. A document from Archbishop Berthold von Henneberg of Mainz from 1492 says of the Jewish cemetery in Neudenau that the Jews in and around Heilbronn , Wimpfen and Swabia had their burial there a long time ago and that the cemetery had not been used for a long time. According to the document, this old cemetery was to serve as a burial place again in the future. The resumption of burials in Neudenau is probably related to the expulsion of the Heilbronn Jews from Heilbronn in 1487. With the restoration of the Neudenau cemetery, a Jew was also allowed to settle in Neudenau again. While only a single Jew lived in Neudenau until the 17th century, the cemetery was occupied by numerous dead from the near and far surrounding area. After a Jewish community had formed again in Neudenau in the late 17th century, the cemetery was maintained jointly by the Jewish communities in Neudenau and Billigheim in the 19th century . A desecration of the cemetery is reported in 1915 when students knocked over 72 tombstones.

The oldest gravestones in the cemetery date from around 1715. As there are neither older gravestones nor open spaces from older graves, it is assumed that today's cemetery was only laid out in the 18th century, while the medieval cemetery is probably different Place.
