The main topics of his work are questions of intermediality and media history. Müller takes the standpoint of an integrative media history that deals with the historical interactions between different media and their influence on a functional change in social and historical contexts. At the center of this media history are the reconstruction of intermedia processes and their effects on everyday media life. His understanding of integrative media studies lies in the area of tension between interdisciplinary research approaches. In this context, he was in charge of the conception and installation of the “ Media Culture and Media Management ” master’s course at the University of Bayreuth , which is located in the methodological and technical area between media studies, history, law, economics and computer science.

His publications have appeared in Russia, Poland, Romania, Hungary, France, Italy, Spain, Sweden, South Korea, Cameroon, Great Britain, Canada, USA and Brazil. Jürgen E.
